Catherine Zeta-Jones has joined the starry cast of the forthcoming 80th birthday tribute to Stephen Sondheim at New York City Center, a gala benefit directed by John Doyle. Proceeds of the celebration, to be held on April 26, will fund City Center’s artistic and education programs as well as Young Playwrights Inc., a charity close to Sondheim’s heart.
The cast list of the gala has shifted somewhat from previous announcements. As of March 22, it will include Tom Aldredge, Len Cariou, Michael Cerveris, Claybourne Elder, Raúl Esparza, Sutton Foster, Alexander Gemignani, Joanna Gleason, Alexander Hanson, Mark Jacoby, Nathan Lane, Angela Lansbury, Debra Monk, Donna Murphy, Michele Pawk, Bernadette Peters, Jim Walton, B.D. Wong, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Chip Zien. Every performer is a veteran of at least one Sondheim production.
The gala will begin with cocktails at City Center, followed by the show and a post-performance dinner at the Plaza Hotel. Gala co-chairs are Joanne Woodward, Bobbie and Lew Frankfort, Perry and Marty Granoff, Stacey and Eric Mindich, and Mary Jo and Ted Shen.
